On March 8, 2025, the Düsseldorfer Sophia-kai hosted a reception for Fr. Sali Augustine, S.J., Chancellor of Sophia School Corporation, together with guests including Fr. Tsutomu Sakuma, S.J., Provincial of the Japan Province of the Society of Jesus; Mr. Makoto Shimizu, Director of Finance at Sophia School Corporation; and Ms. Fumiko Nakamura, Deputy Director of Office of Community & Alumni Relations.
Fifteen Sophia alumni gathered at a beer hall in the heart of Düsseldorf, enjoying German cuisine and warm conversation in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
In his speech, Fr. Augustine remarked, "Sophia University is known for its global character. That reputation is thanks to alumni like you, who are active around the world. I am proud of you and truly grateful for the role you play as the face of Sophia." His words resonated with the attendees, with one alumnus commenting, "His message inspired me to continue striving forward."
The evening's conversations touched on a wide range of topics, including Japan's declining birthrate and its implications for university management, international academic competition, the history and state of Christianity in India, Fr. Augustine's home country, Fr. Sakuma's experiences studying in Germany, followed by lighthearted conversation about ideas for business in Germany.
The gathering concluded in a warm and spirited atmosphere with a heartfelt solo performance of the university anthem by Ryunosuke Takahashi (Department of German Studies '79), and a rousing cheer led by Junichi Takeda (Department of Economics '65).
Although airport strikes across Germany disrupted the guests' original travel plans, the participants were relieved to hear that they returned safely to Japan.
