2025年02月05日
On January 18th, the Düsseldorfer Sophia-kai held its New Year General Meeting at the Japanese restaurant Hyuga in Düsseldorf. We had a total of 36 attendees, including 26 alumni and their families, as well as five current students studying in Germany. The room we reserved was full, and it was an evening filled with lively conversation and memorable moments.
The event opened with a toast by Chairman Masakazu Tachikawa (Department of German Studies '86). In his speech, he encouraged the attendees, quoting the university anthem: "Like the lyrics of the anthem, 'Push through the murky darkness,' let us find light and move forward with strength even amid uncertain social circumstances." Yohei Otsuka (Department of Management '06) skillfully emceed the event, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.
This year's gathering brought together a diverse range of participants, from a four-and-a-half-month-old baby to the eldest member, Dr. Shingo Yoshida (Department of Journalism '60), fostering intergenerational connections. The student attendees eagerly listened to the alumni's experiences and advice, engaging in serious discussions such as how to find employment at companies with good benefits.
The highlight of the evening was the traditional group singing of the university anthem, led by Junichi Takeda (Department of Economics '65). Before this, Ryunosuke Takahashi (Department of German Studies '79) gave a solo performance of the anthem in German, setting a warm and uplifting tone for the occasion. The meal concluded with Hyuga's signature dish, katsu curry. The evening wrapped up with a group photo, as attendees wished each other a successful year ahead in a cheerful and amicable atmosphere.
One of the student attendees, Fu Toya (Department of German Studies, Class of 2023), shared her impressions: "I was inspired to see how Sophia University's network extends worldwide. It made me feel a renewed sense of responsibility and determination. Witnessing the alumni thriving in various fields made me realize that, with enough effort, I too can become someone who brings my convictions to life, whether in Japan or globally."
Fu also expressed that she was impressed with the words of encouragement given to her by one of the alumni: "The experience of being born and raised in Japan, studying at Sophia, aspiring to the world, and coming to Germany to study is a rare and valuable journey. If you take pride in being one of the few with such an experience, it will surely become a strength that serves you to its fullest potential."
