Washington DC Sophians' Joint Holiday Party with ICU (December 15, 2024)

A joint Sophia-ICU holiday party was held this month on a freezing afternoon. Oh, the weather outside was frightful but the gathering was so delightful as the famous song goes! After a long hiatus from any Sophia related activities, (I have been busy with raising kids, managing the household matters while starting a business, etc.) I was welcomed by both familiar and new faces of various ages and backgrounds. Conversing with them came so naturally and I was intrigued by the backgrounds of all of them there. How I wish I could have stayed longer to continue those conversations!
One of the highlights of the party was the guest speakers representing each university. We had Mr. Teruyuki Kashimoto, TBS News Washington DC Bureau Chief representing Sophia and Amb. Kurt Tong, former US senior diplomat whose background includes Director for Asian Economic Affairs at the White House National Security Council and Ambassador for APEC. Kashimoto-san spoke about the behind-the-scenes media perspective with respect to the recent US Presidential election. Tong-san spoke about the prospect of the 2nd Trump administration. I truly appreciate the honest views given by both gentlemen, partially helped by the off-the-record nature of the talks, but also by their frank and friendly personalities. You see, I have clients who pay a fortune to travel from Japan just to talk to US policy experts like Mr. Tong. Getting to understand the unfiltered media perspective is such a rare thing I don't even know if one can get that kind of opportunity anywhere else unless you know them personally. In short, no one can put a price on anything like this and I'm truly grateful to have had this kind of opportunity!
I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to those who undoubtedly worked very hard to make this kind of gathering happen. I have nothing but appreciation and respect for them. Now I have many more Sophia and joint events to look forward to!
