ワシントンDCソフィア会訪問

9月4日、上智大学で新たに始まったプログラム 「The World is My Campus（世界がキャンパス）」 の一環として、現役上智大学生14名がワシントンDCを訪れ、現地ソフィア会との交流会が開催されました。米国の歴史・政治・経済・メディアを現場で体感する夏季講座として開講された本プログラムは、NYソフィア会会長であり、ロイター社ジャーナリストとして、また映画監督としても幅広く活躍される我謝京子先生（イスパニア語学科卒） のご提案によりスタートしたものです。
交流会には、上智大学から学生・関係者合わせて16名、DCソフィア会から卒業生9名が参加しました。会場は、卒業生でありワシントンDCソフィア会会長の 中阪清志氏 のご厚意により、歴代の米国議員等も利用してきた由緒ある The Monocle Restaurant をご手配いただきました。
懇親会では、自己紹介に加え、ディナーテーブルごとに卒業生のキャリアや学生生活など多彩な話題で盛り上がり、世代を超えた交流の輪が広がりました。私自身も、この8月よりワシントンDCで大学院生活を始めたばかりで、社会人として海外のソフィア会に参加するのは今回が初めての機会となりました。学生や卒業生の皆様との早速のご縁に心から感謝しています。
思い起こせば、学部2年次に参加した 上智大学国連研修プログラム でNYを訪れた際、当時NYソフィア会会長でいらした我謝先生とご縁をいただきました。総合グローバル学部1期生として既卒生がいない中で、その出会いが、社会人人生におけるキャリアモデルを築く大きなきっかけとなりました。そして今回、フルブライト奨学生として再び我謝先生の後輩となり、先生の教え子である学生の皆さんとワシントンDCで再会できたことは、大変光栄で感慨深いことです。
今回の交流は、当時の私にとってそうであったように、現役学生にとっても大きな刺激となり、今後につながるご縁になったことと期待します。同時に、卒業生にとってもソフィア会の絆を改めて実感する貴重な機会となりました。まさに「世界がキャンパス」という言葉を体現する時間であり、今後のさらなる交流の広がりを期待させる集いとなりました。
最後に、ワシントンDCソフィア会の皆様、これからどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。そして上智大学の皆様、今後も長いご縁になりますように。

On September 4, as part of the newly launched program at Sophia University, "The World is My Campus," fourteen current Sophia students visited Washington, D.C. and participated in an exchange meeting with the Washington, D.C. Sophia-kai. This program was established as a summer course designed to experience U.S. history, politics, economics, and media firsthand, and was initiated at the proposal of Professor Kyoko Gasha (Department of Hispanic Studies alumna), who currently serves as President of the New York Sophia-kai, works as a journalist at Reuters, and is also a film director.
The exchange meeting was attended by a total of 16 participants from Sophia University, including students and faculty members, along with 9 alumni from the D.C. Sophia-kai. Thanks to the kind arrangement of Mr. Kiyoshi Nakasaka, alumnus and President of the Washington, D.C. Sophia-kai, the gathering was held at the historic The Monocle Restaurant, a venue long frequented by members of the U.S. Congress.
During the dinner, participants introduced themselves and engaged in lively discussions at each table, ranging from alumni career paths to student life, creating a vibrant space for intergenerational exchange. For myself, having just begun my graduate studies in Washington, D.C. this August, this was the very first opportunity to join an overseas Sophia-kai as a working professional, and I am truly grateful for the connections made with both students and alumni at such an early stage of my time here.
Looking back, I recall participating in the Sophia University UN Study Tour to New York in my sophomore year, where I first met Professor Gasha, then President of the New York Sophia-kai. As a member of the first graduating class of the Faculty of Global Studies, I had no alumni predecessors at the time, and that encounter became a formative model for my future career. Now, as a Fulbright scholar, it is deeply meaningful and a great honor for me to once again follow in Professor Gasha's footsteps and to meet her students here in Washington, D.C.
I believe that, just as it once was for me, this exchange served as a source of great inspiration for the current students and as an opportunity to build connections for the future. At the same time, it was also a valuable occasion for alumni to reaffirm the bonds of the Sophia community. It truly embodied the spirit of "The World is My Campus" and became a gathering that inspires hope for continued and expanded exchanges in the years ahead.
Lastly, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the Washington, D.C. Sophia-kai and look forward to your continued guidance and support. I also sincerely hope that the ties with Sophia University will remain strong for many years to come.
