インターポールU.S. Central Bureau見学会を実施

5月19日、ワシントンDCソフィア会は、現在米国司法省にお勤めのハワード・ストーンさん（2008年FLAプログラム 留学）のご厚意により、同省内に居を構える国際刑事警察機構（インターポール／ICPO）のU.S. Central Bureauの見学会を行いました。見学には、ワシントンDCに在住・留学中のソフィアンに加え、その同僚・友人の方々も参加。インターポールの業務全般についてのレクチャーを受けた後、オペレーション・センターにもご案内いただき、国境を越えた犯罪対処のための現場を拝見しました。
ICPOと聞いて、ルパンIII世の銭形警部を思い出した参加者も少なからずいましたが（私もその一人）、捜査官が国境を越えて活躍する派手なイメージは、あくまで映画や小説の世界の話。実際にインターポールが行っているのは、各国の捜査機関の間で情報やデータを共有し、効果的な犯罪捜査をバックアップするという地味な（しかしとても重要な）業務であることを学ぶ機会となりました。

On May 19th, by courtesy of Mr. Howard Stone (2008 FLA Program) who works for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the Sophia Alumni Association in Washington DC visited the U.S. Central Bureau of Interpol (ICPO), located in the DOJ building. In addition, their colleagues and friend also joined this office call. We listened to a lecture on how Interpol deals with crimes beyond borders, and visited its operation center to observe their daily functions.
It appears that many are under the impression that Interpol investigates global crimes by its own investigators who run criminals down by placing themselves in various dangerous and difficult situations, and ICPO reminds many of us - myself included - of Inspector Zenigata in Lupin the Third, a popular Japanese animation. However, such an eye-catching image of Interpol is in reality a myth created by movies and novels. We learned that what Interpol really does is rather behind-the-scenes, albeit important, work such as coordinating the international sharing of criminal information and data to aid enforcement agencies in each country in effectively investigating crimes.
