鳥居ソフィア会会長が9月期学位授与式で祝辞

「Sophia provided you an opportunity to kickstart your journey of study」

　上智大学は9月期の学位授与式を、9月17日(金)午前10時から学内6号館101教室において行いました。コロナ禍の影響により、卒業生と登壇者・列席者のみが入場、父母・保証人など関係者などにはYouTubeでその様子がリアルタイム配信されました。
　この9月期の学位授与式はすべて英語で行われており、今回も曄道佳明上智大学長による式辞、佐久間勤上智学院理事長の祝辞に続いて登壇した鳥居正男ソフィア会会長も英語で祝辞を述べました。

●卒業は"終わり"ではない

　鳥居会長は簡単に自己紹介をしたあと、本日、学生たちが迎えた「卒業」ということについて、次のように語りかけました。
　「It goes without saying that graduation is a critical milestone in life. In Japanese, the word graduation translates as 'Sotsugyo,' and Sotsugyo consists of two words, namely 'sotsu' which means 'finish' and 'gyo' which means 'study.' Hence, sotsugyo can be translated as 'finish studying.' However, if you look up the word sotsugyo in a Japanese-English dictionary, you will notice that the words graduation and commencement also appear. The word commencement of course means beginning. Well, I am not here to give you a lecture on linguistics. However, I wish to remind you that you are here today, at the beginning of your extension of learning. Sophia provided you an opportunity to kickstart your journey of study, a journey that has no end.」
　卒業は単なる勉学の終わりを意味するものではなく、卒業してもその学びの旅は続くという言葉です。

●コロナ後の時代を見据えて

　続けて鳥居会長は、コロナ禍で授業の多くがオンラインとなり、課外活動も十分できなかったことにふれ、学生たちの努力を次のように称えました。
　「Yet, despite all such hardships, you have managed to successfully complete your study, and for this I admire your dedication and strong will. Indeed, you all deserve special recognition for this extraordinary achievement.」
　また、コロナウイルスで社会は大きく変化するが、それに積極的に関わる必要があると訴えました。
　「This coronavirus pandemic has accelerated change, and we will never return to the pre-pandemic life. The new normal will indeed differ greatly, and you will be the drivers of this profound change. You will be the ones to actively reform society, by following the spirit of "Men and Women for Others, with Others."」

●ソフィアンズ・ネットワークにようこそ

　最後に鳥居会長は、ソフィア会は14万人の会員を擁し、日本はもとより海外にも65の地域ソフィア会があり、それらが大きな"ソフィアンズ・ネットワーク"を形作っていることを紹介。
　「These organizations are closely related to other groups established by alumni, forming vertical and horizontal networks, in order to promote exchange among members and contribute to the university.」
　そして、6号館6階にソフィア会会員の交流の場としてソフィアンズクラブがあり、ぜひ訪れてくださいと訴えました。
　「We have Sophians club on the 6th floor of Building 6 as a place for networking among the members. It is a cozy and friendly place. Please do stop by when you can.」 最後に、次のような言葉で挨拶を終えました。
　「You are graduating from Sophia University with deep feelings of pride, and I am sure this pride in being Sophia graduates will remain all your lives. Since the Sophia-kai will keep you bonded with our University, I urge you all to become active members of this Sophian network. As the first step, please be sure to make a web entry of your personal data as a graduate.
　So, once again, hearty congratulations to all of you.」
