Details of the Objectives of the Sophia 100th Anniversary Fundraising Project


Sophia's 100th Anniversary is in 2013…
and your help is needed to keep Sophia moving strongly into its second century

Sophia recently established a project for enabling the university to stay at the forefront in education as it moves into its second century. The university seeks to complete donation activity for the project by the 100th anniversary. The project has three parts: 1) redevelopment of the Yotsuya campus; 2) improvement of the undergraduate and graduate educational systems; and 3) establishment of scholarship funds.

The full project cost is projected to be 30 billion yen, with 5 billion yen sought in donation support.

Each part of the project is further described below.


Redevelopment of the Yotsuya campus

New construction and renovation is targeted to be completed by 2013.

Science & Engineering Faculty Building: remove the present Sophia Kaikan and Building 6, and construct a new building on that land.

New Gymnasium and Green Zone: remove the present Buildings 3, 4 and Gymnasium, and build a new Gymnasium and Green Zone on that land.

Renovation of Buildings 10, 11 and Kioi-zaka: as a result of the movement related to newly completed Building 2,
a) renovate Buildings 10 and 11 to provide better classrooms and research rooms, and
b) renovate Kioi-zaka Building to be a multi-purpose building.

Completion of Building 2: as a symbol of the Sophia 100th Anniversary Project, Building 2 was completed in March 2005.

Construction of Power Station 3: this was built next to Hoffman Hall, to provide improvements in air conditioning, high-voltage power, and drinking water supply.

Edagawa Dormitory: With the closing of the men's dormitory at the Yotsuya campus, a one-room type dormitory was established at Edagawa, Koto ward in Tokyo. The women's dormitory, Enoki-ryo, will be renovated.

Enhancement of the undergraduate and graduate educational systems

  • The undergraduate, graduate and research programs will be strengthened.
  • Advancement of the small-class educational system.
  • Promotion of international exchange for the undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Establishment of a language education faculty.
  • Improvements in link-ups with society

Establishment of scholarship funds

  • For exceptional new students: 2 students in each major / specialty: 300,000 yen
  • For exceptional students receiving type 1 scholarships, 1 student in each major: 200,000 yen
  • For a present student who passes the judiciary, CPA and other exams: 300,000 yen
  • For an exceptional student completing a master's thesis and advancing to a doctoral program, 1 student per specialty: 300,000 yen
  • For exceptional international students entered as regular students and paying their own expenses, 20 students yearly: 300,000 yen
